Dodgers confident after routing Braves 13-6

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The Dodgers clinched the NL West title on the road. They want to advance in the playoffs on their home turf and celebrate with their fans.

Los Angeles put itself in position to do just that on Monday night, taking a 2-1 lead over the Atlanta Braves into Game 4 of the National League division series.

"The good thing is that all of the hitters feel good about themselves and where they're at. That is a carry over," center fielder Skip Schumaker said. "Confidence is huge. Hitting is contagious and it's all about confidence."

Every starting position player except Mark Ellis had a hit in the Dodgers' 13-6 victory on Sunday night, and he scored one of their runs that tied a franchise record for a postseason game. Brooklyn beat the New York Yankees 13-8 in Game 2 of the 1956 World Series.

"We want to win it in front of our fans at home," Ellis said. "We want to end it."

The Dodgers will start Ricky Nolasco against veteran Freddy Garcia.

"I've got to face a powerful team, powerful lineup," Garcia said.

The Dodgers flexed their offensive muscle by pounding out 14 hits, with much of the production coming off the bats of their big-name talent.

Carl Crawford hit a three-run homer, Juan Uribe added a two-run shot, and Hanley Ramirez and Yasiel Puig each had three hits and scored three times.

Ramirez tied a Dodgers record for most extra-base hits in a postseason series with six. He's 7 for 13 with four doubles, a triple, a homer and the six RBIs through his first three playoff games in his ninth major league season.

"At the plate, right now I'm not thinking," Ramirez said. "I'm just looking at the ball and hit it, whatever the pitch is. It's an unbelievable feeling when it's just less thinking, just produce. Go out there and have fun and play hard."

After losing 4-3 in Game 2 to let the Braves even the series, the Dodgers returned to the offensive form they showed during a 6-1 victory in the opener on the road.

"Guys were unhappy with the way they played, so we wanted to get back to playing the way we did the first game," Crawford said. "We knew it was going to be at home in front of our home crowd, and we were going to have some extra energy for that. Hopefully, we can like wrap it up while we're here at home."

Crawford made the play of the game Sunday when he tumbled head over heels to catch an eighth-inning foul ball at the low retaining wall in left field. The speedy leadoff man also scored three times, including once in the eighth when the Dodgers made it 13-4.

"I'm fine. I landed in a way it didn't hurt," he said. "I didn't think the ball was going to go into the stands. It kept floating and I didn't see the wall coming. I felt myself flipping over. Good thing is I held onto the ball, so that's all that matters."

Chris Capuano won in relief of ineffective rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu. He struck out three and walked three in three hitless innings.

"We're trying to keep it loose in here but we're really focused right now," Capuano said.

The 13 runs allowed by the Braves equaled the most in club history for a postseason game.

Atlanta starter Julio Teheran took the loss, giving up six runs and eight hits in 2 2-3 innings.

"He just left some balls out over the plate and made some mistakes," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "With this club, if you do that, you're going to look down at a gas tank with a lighted match."

Los Angeles rallied in the third to regain the lead for good after Atlanta tied it in the top of the inning. After that, the Braves didn't manage much besides Jason Heyward's two-run homer in the ninth.

Teheran and Ryu both made inauspicious postseason debuts in the first matchup of rookie pitchers in the playoffs since 2007.

In addition to being shaky on the mound, Ryu made two major mistakes in the field. He allowed four runs and six hits in three innings, becoming the first South Korean-born pitcher to start a postseason game in the major leagues.

Los Angeles extended its lead to 10-4 with four runs in the fourth. Ramirez had an RBI triple.

"I just kept telling him, 'I want the whole world to see how good you are,'" Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "It's been good so far."

Puig added an RBI single and Uribe followed with a two-run homer on the first pitch he saw from reliever Alex Wood.

"With two outs there, if we get out of that inning, it's a whole different ballgame," Braves catcher Brian McCann said. "But it just didn't turn out the way we wanted. Carl hit a slider that hung up a little bit more than we wanted and he put a good swing on it."

The Dodgers regained the lead 6-4 in the third on RBI singles by Adrian Gonzalez and Schumaker.

Atlanta tied it 4-all with two runs in the third after loading the bases with nobody out.

The Dodgers scored four times in the second to take a 4-2 lead, highlighted by Crawford's three-run homer with two outs.

NOTES: Ryu's sacrifice fly in the second was the first postseason RBI by a Dodgers pitcher since Orel Hershiser on Oct. 16, 1988, in Game 2 of the World Series. ... Dodgers C A.J. Ellis got hit on the left elbow by a pitch from hard-throwing Jordan Walden in the eighth, but stayed in the game. Ellis had X-rays after the game and said he felt fine. ... Capuano's only other major league win in relief came on Aug. 20, 2010, for Milwaukee. ... It was the first time in Teheran and Ryu's careers as starters that their pitching lines had more runs than innings.

Target's Brightspot mobile service launches Sunday, starts at $35 per month

Target announces Brightspot, a prepaid mobile service for arrival on October 6th

Ever tenacious retailer Target is once again nipping at Walmart's heels. Following the introduction of its Target Ticket video-on-demand service -- a direct competitor to Vudu -- the big box chain is now looking to get into the prepaid phone business with a service known as Brightspot. The MVNO is set to launch on October 6th, which will use T-Mobile's network and serve as Target's answer to Straight Talk. Brightspot will offer two service tiers, one for $35 that includes unlimited talk and text, in addition to a $50 plan that piles on unlimited data with 1GB of high-speed use. While Target's offering is a bit less tempting than Walmart's (which offers 2.5GB of high-speed usage for $45), the bullseye retailer will reward loyal subscribers with a $25 Target gift card for each six months of paid Brightspot service. Consider it one more excuse to kick your costly monthly phone plan to the curb.

Rio de Janeiro?s mayor dreams of making his city South America?s answer to Hollywood

RIO DE JANEIRO ? For Mayor Eduardo Paes, it?s not enough that Rio de Janeiro is both an Olympic and a World Cup host city. He?s determined to turn Rio into a Woody Allen city, too, and has gone to extraordinary lengths to persuade the director to shoot a movie here, meeting with Allen?s sister, dispatching him handwritten notes and even pledging to underwrite 100 per cent of production costs.

Allen hasn?t taken Paes up on his offer, but the mayor continues to lobby hard. Scoring a film by the legendary director would help cement Paes? vision for the city: to turn Rio into a cinema hub, the Los Angeles of South America.

While Hollywood needn?t watch its back just yet, there?s no doubt that Brazil?s film industry is booming.

The country is on track to make 100 feature films this year, up from 30 in 2003, and it?s increasingly sought out by foreign productions cashing in on the government?s generous subsidies and incentives. New studio complexes are in the works, and cinemas are mushrooming across Brazil to keep pace with ever-growing numbers of movie-goers, many of them new members of the middle class who were pulled out of poverty by a decade of booming economic growth.

?The big shift is that now many more people have disposable income,? said Adrien Muselet, chief operating officer of RioFilme, the city government?s film finance company. ?Once you?ve covered your basic necessities, bought your fridge and your washing machine, what do you want next? Fun. And for many people, that means the movies.?

The new viewers have helped push Brazil?s box office gross from $327 million in 2008 to $737 million last year, according to the trade publication Filme B. That puts Brazil among the top 10 movie consuming countries in the world, said Muselet, and the industry is taking note.

With its population of 204 million, this South American giant is increasingly factoring into the major United States studios? strategic calculations.

?When you take an American blockbuster and you set it here in Brazil, even for just a couple of scenes, it just explodes in the box office here,? said Muselet, pointing to ?Breaking Dawn,? part of the ?Twilight? series of teen vampire movies, which was filmed partially on location in Rio and the coastal colonial city of Paraty. Brazilians flocked to the movie, and the country ended up being the film?s second biggest market.

Other big Hollywood productions such as ?Fast Five? of the ?Fast and Furious? franchise and the Sylvester Stallone vehicle ?The Expendables? were also partially shot here in recent years. ?Billy Elliot? director Stephen Daldry?s ?Trash? is currently rolling.

Rio officials also hope movies made here will help burnish the image of a city mostly notorious for its grinding poverty and drug-fueled violence, particularly as Rio gears up to host next year?s soccer World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

In a bid to attract more foreign productions, Rio?s state government created an agency to walk teams through Brazil?s Byzantine bureaucracy, helping them get the dizzying number of permits and permissions needed to shoot. The Rio Film Commission also hopes to increasingly help foreign productions find Brazilian investors, allowing them to qualify for the government subsidies and incentives that make up the lion?s share of practically all movie budgets here.

Producer Aaron Berger, an American who works in both Rio and Los Angeles, said the subsidies helped get thing rolling for his series ?Gaby Estrela,? which is about to premier on Globo TV?s kids cable channel Gloob. ?It was a tremendous boost for us,? he said.

Over the past decade, the federal government has spent more than $450 million on films, and many state and city governments also invest in movies made locally, provided they meet requirements that typically include hiring at least a certain number of local employees. And since Brazilian law allows corporate tax write-offs for cultural projects, companies such as petroleum giant Petrobras and cellphone provider Claro often underwrite movies.

Brazilian films have made inroads internationally in the last five years, notably the ?Elite Squad? films probing gang violence and political corruption in Rio. Other domestic fare includes smart comedies and smaller budget films aimed at the art-house circuit.

The industry also got a boost from a 2011 law requiring all cable television channels to show at least 3 1/2 hours of independently produced local content each week during prime time.

?All of a sudden there?s a huge demand for this sort of content,? said Steve Solot, president of the Latin American Training Center, a Rio-based audiovisual consultancy. ?It?s a fantastic new market.?

The industry?s sudden growth has caused shortages of qualified technicians, such as electricians, camera operators and sound people, and RioFilme is scrambling to fill the gap through training courses.

?We wouldn?t be seeing this kind of shortage if there weren?t a lot of demand,? said the agency?s president, Sergio Sa Leitao. ?In a strange way, it?s a really good thing.?

Whale mass stranding attributed to sonar mapping for first time

[unable to retrieve full-text content]An independent scientific review panel has concluded that the mass stranding of approximately 100 melon-headed whales in the Loza Lagoon system in northwest Madagascar in 2008 was primarily triggered by acoustic stimuli, more specifically, a multi-beam echosounder system operated by a survey vessel contracted by ExxonMobil Exploration and Production (Northern Madagascar) Limited.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- Erica Campbell said her youngest child, Ava "Bug" Campbell,?was a miracle from the start because she and her husband were told they couldn't have more children. But Ava's big sister prayed hard, and with the blessing came a challenge.

"She was diagnosed at 21-months-old with a very high risk, rare type of acute Lymphoblastic leukemia. Her's has a gene mutation with it, so it just makes it more complicated to treat and easier to relapse," said Erica. That meant daily chemo at home and trips to Children's Hospital in Birmingham for more treatment.

Erica said it's a journey of faith. "It's really shown us not only to be an advocate for our daughter, but to be an advocate for our friends who have buried their children," she added.

Hence the gold bows, bracelets and more... "We have been going to different towns and speaking with the mayors and asking them to declare their town or county as September being childhood cancer awareness month," said Erica.

With that advocacy comes a reality for a family of faith. "If her healing takes place here on Earth, that's what we want. But we know that if God's plan is different, we're going to be okay with that."

By sharing Ava's story, parents and friends hope to not only raise awareness about childhood cancer, but to some day turn that awareness into a cure.

5 Stress Busters for Students | World of Psychology - Psych Central

5 Stress Busters for Students School is packed with potential stressors ? everything from penning research papers to giving presentations to taking final exams. Plus, if you?re away at college, you have the added stress of being on your own and navigating a slew of unfamiliar places and situations.

While stress is inevitable for students, it doesn?t have to bulldoze your life or affect your academic performance.

Below, Kathryn Tristan, a research scientist on the faculty of the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, shares five tips for helping students like you to have a lower-stress semester.

1. Think positive possibilities, not catastrophes.

?The least helpful way we worry and stress out is by imagining the worst possible disaster might happen,? said Tristan, also author of the book Why Worry? Stop Coping and Start Living. She calls this ?terribilizing.? One negative thought leads to another, and before you know it, you?re visualizing all the ways you?re going to fail the exam and fail at life.

It might start with this kind of thought: ?I have to ace this test or it will be awful.? Then ?your mind responds to this perceived threat and constructs many dire outcomes such as if you don?t get an ?A,? you?ll never get into grad school and then you?ll have only jobs that pay minimum wage, and then you?ll never be able to pay back your student debt [and so on].?

A better approach is to ?possibilize,? she said. In other words, let your mind feast on positive outcomes. So your self-talk might sound like this: ?This is only one test, and all I can do is prepare and do my best. Perhaps I need more help or tutoring. It?s OK to feel anxious. I?ll just study more. Some stress is good because it will motivate me to try harder. I always do the best I can.?

(Also helpful, according to Tristan, is simply saying to yourself and your thoughts: ?Stop.?)

It takes effort to recognize when your thoughts have swerved off the rails, turning into one big negative loop. But with practice, you?ll be able to catch yourself and focus on being productive instead of paralyzed by catastrophic thoughts. Because here?s the reality: Most of our worries never even happen. And when bad things do occur, most people say ?they handled it better than they thought they would.?

2. Focus on study strategies that work.

There?s nothing more stressful than cramming the night before a final exam. It?s overwhelming and virtually impossible to absorb all the information. Plus, you rarely sleep enough, sabotaging your ability to concentrate and think clearly the next day.

That?s why it?s helpful to ?break down large projects into several smaller tasks,? Tristan said. Keep a planner, and set deadlines for each task.

It?s also critical to study smart. For instance, some research has found that common study habits such as rereading and highlighting actually aren?t that effective. But taking practice tests and studying over time is effective. (Learn more about highly effective study habits.)

3. Get moving.

?Moving is a natural way to clear blocked, stressed out energy,? Tristan said. It boosts your mood, reduces anxiety and helps you think more clearly. Pick activities that you genuinely enjoy, such as walking, running, dancing or taking group classes at the gym.

4. Nourish your brain and body.

We often forget the power of nutrient-rich foods, especially when we?re overwhelmed and pressed for time. Food has a great effect on our mood, energy level and ability to concentrate.

Tristan suggested adding the following foods to your diet: ?oatmeal, fruits, vegetables, low-fat yogurt, lean meat, nuts, milk and eggs. When you have trouble sleeping, add such things as bananas, milk or turkey ? sources of tryptophan, a building block for the neurotransmitter serotonin ? cherries ? a source of sleep-inducing melatonin ? and chamomile tea ? used for centuries to relax.?

5. Tune into the present.

Instead of rehashing the past or forecasting an awful future, focus on the present moment. Tristan suggested asking yourself these key questions several times a day.

  • ?What do I see?? This helps you get grounded and interrupts stressful thoughts.
  • ?What do I hear?? This helps you ?focus on other things in your life.?
  • ?Am I feeling stressed?? Learning to recognize when you?re stressed or anxious is the first step in doing something (healthy) about it.
  • ?How can I change that?? Pick a healthy way to manage your stress (such as any of the above.)

Tristan also recommended taking four deep breaths. ?Stressed out, shallow breathing is automatic, and you can take charge and do diaphragmatic or belly breathing to restore a sense of calm.? (Here?s more on diaphragmatic breathing.)

Stress can sabotage your studying efforts and affect other areas of your life. Fortunately, it doesn?t have to. By learning healthy coping strategies, you can traverse stressful situations without wrecking your well-being.

What The New 'Star Wars' Movies Need: Sharad Hett

By Ryan Rigley Just because Disney refuses to confirm any of the previous "Star Wars VII" casting rumors, doesn't mean that the rumors will stop. Last week, Latino Review, the site that broke the news of Benedict Cumberbatch appearing in all three of the new "Star Wars" films, made mention of actress Saoirse Ronan ("Hanna," […]
