(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NEW YORK ? ? Responding to consumer demand for ultra-high-speed home broadband service, verizon next month will more than double the speeds of several of its FiOS Internet tiers ? and introduce two new tiers with even faster speeds.

The new FiOS Internet portfolio will feature download/upload speed tiers of 50/25 and 150/65 megabits per second (Mbps), as well as two new tiers of 75/35 and 300/65 Mbps. The latter speed is double that of FiOS Internet?s current top speed of 150/35 Mbps, the nation?s fastest, mass scale residential Internet speed.

In addition, verizon will continue to offer its entry-level speed of 15/5 Mbps. The other speeds in the company?s current industry-leading FiOS Internet portfolio are 25/25, 35/35 50/20 and 150/35 Mbps. The new speeds, to be offered in stand-alone and bundled packages, are designed to address the burgeoning growth of bandwidth-intensive applications and the increase in the number of Internet-connected devices being used simultaneously in the same household. The speeds will also support consumers who are watching more over-the-top video programming on TVs and portable devices, and accommodate the rise in Internet-enabled applications like video and audio streaming, home monitoring devices , video chat, multiplayer gaming and online backup services, all of which can simultaneously sap the strength of many home broadband connections.

Bob Mudge, president of verizon?s consumer and mass market business unit, characterized the broadband speed increases as a ?societal and technological necessity,? as secure network applications enable consumers to enjoy a ?borderless lifestyle? in which they can connect to the content they care about, anytime and anywhere.

?The ways we used the Internet and watched TV over the past 10 to 15 years have dramatically shifted,? said Mudge. ?With the emergence of smartphones, smart TVs, Blu-ray players, tablets and gaming consoles that also serve as over-the-top devices, consumers need more bandwidth to receive the highest-quality experience.?

The higher downstream and upstream FiOS tiers that Verizon will deliver will provide customers with sustained speed and reliability of service, in contrast to intermittent speed boosts offered by cable-company competitors whose networks, unlike Verizon?s, are not all-fiber optic.

How FiOS Internet Speeds Meet Individual Needs of Consumers

Consumers will be able to choose from the new range of FiOS speed options to maximize their broadband or video experience. For example, the 15/5 Mbps tier is best used for basic tasks such as email and Web browsing in a household of one or two Internet-connected users with several devices. In contrast, the 50/25 Mbps tier can best serve a multiple-device household with three or more users who frequently telecommute, enjoy downloading music and photos, and viewing videos on PCs or wireless devices.

The new 75/35 Mbps tier best serves a household that streams HD movies to the TV , downloads or uploads video files, participates in multiplayer gaming, and has three or more Internet-connected users on multiple devices.

The most powerful 150/65 and 300/65 Mbps speed tiers are designed for households of five or more Internet-connected users who want to receive the best standard- and high-definition video streaming experience on a variety of devices.

Why Video Web Traffic Is Fueling the Need for Faster Bandwidth

?Our top FiOS speed will be twice as fast as anything America has ever seen,? said Mike Ritter, chief marketing officer for Verizon?s consumer and mass market business unit. ?High-speed Internet no longer is just for techies, as more than half of our residential consumers already use at least a 20 Mbps Internet connection. Streaming online video on an all-fiber-optic connection providing faster speeds is better and more reliable during peak Internet usage hours.

?As recently as 2005, video was less than 10 percent of Web traffic,? said Ritter. ?By the end of this year, we expect it to be 50 percent, growing to 90 percent in just a few years.?

Today, the average home has seven Internet-connected devices. With the continuing increase of devices in the home using a wired or Wi-Fi Internet connection, the average home by 2015 will have between nine and 15 Internet-connected devices, said Ritter.

The majority of Verizon customers will be able to order the two fastest-speed options of 150 and 300 Mbps, which require customers to be connected via a GPON (gigabit passive optical network) terminal. For existing customers who have a BPON (broadband passive optical network) terminal and qualify for the GPON service, the installation of a new GPON terminal will be required.

With a 300 Mbps speed, consumers can download a two-hour, standard-definition movie (1.5 gigabytes) in less than 40 seconds; and a two-hour, high-definition movie (5 GB) in 2.2 minutes. On a 150 Mbps connection, the same two-hour, SD movie can be downloaded in less than 80 seconds, and the two-hour, HD movie in less than four-and-a-half minutes.

Downloading 20 high-resolution photographs (100 megabytes) would take 2.8 seconds with a 300/65 Mbps connection and 5.4 seconds using the 150/65 Mbps service. With the 65 Mbps upstream speed, consumers can upload 200 high-resolution photos or five minutes of HD video in 31 seconds, and in 58 seconds with the 35 Mbps upstream service.

More than 13.7 million customers in parts of nine Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states plus parts of Florida, Texas, California and the District of Columbia can order FiOS Internet. The total will grow to 18 million as Verizon continues to deploy its all-fiber-optic network to serve more consumers and small businesses.

The crypt in which Elvis Presley's body was first laid to rest before being moved to the grounds of his Graceland mansion is set to be auctioned off in June along with other memorabilia from rock music and sports stars.?

Julien's Auctions Sports Legends and Music Icons sale will feature items from Rolling Stone guitarist Keith Richards and the late singer Amy Winehouse to basketball superstar Michael Jordan, the auctioneer said in a statement on Monday.?

But the original Elvis crypt is likely to gain a lot of attention. Elvis, among the best known rock 'n' rollers of all time, died in 1977 and following his funeral at Graceland, his body was temporarily entombed in the crypt of a private mausoleum at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee.?

After about two months, both his body and that of his mother were moved to a permanent site in the meditation garden on the grounds of Graceland. Beverly Hills-based Julien's said the lot for sale includes the crypt, opening and closing of the vault for burial, memorial inscription and use of a small chapel for a memorial service.?

The two-day sale on June 23 and 24 also includes a ripped t-shirt with "Hell" scrawled across it Keith Richards once wore while playing for the Stones.?

A robe that Amy Winehouse used in her video for smash hit "Rehab" will be sold, as will memorabilia and clothing owned by David Bowie, John Lennon and Michael Jackson.?

Millions in global aid for Iraq sits unspent

BAQOUBA, Iraq (AP) ? Outside the crumbling elementary school, goats feed on trash strewn across the front yard. Inside, the ceiling is rotting, toilets don't work and students scrunch hip-to-hip behind narrow desks.

Millions of dollars in international aid to build and repair Iraq's dilapidated schools have for years gone unspent. Now, Iraq's government risks losing the funding as the World Bank weighs whether some of it would be better used elsewhere.

The dilemma is one that echoes across the international aid community ? whether to continue financing a government with vast oil resources and a $100 billion annual budget or divert the assistance to needier nations. It also reflects growing frustration over the bureaucratic hurdles and contracting problems that have kept the money from being used.

The spending delays have left buildings like the scruffy al-Min elementary school in the former insurgent stronghold of Baqouba, 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad, in limbo. It's one of thousands of schools across Iraq that desperately need money for repair.

"The building looks like a prison, not a school," said headmaster Abdul-Karim Mohammed Sabti. "This is not an appropriate atmosphere for learning."

The education aid is a slice of $1.3 billion in grants and loans the World Bank and its donor nations have given Iraq since 2004 to fund efforts ranging from labor and welfare programs to providing emergency health services and protecting the environment. Initially, the money was intended to help rebuild the country after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein. But the bank maintained the assistance as it became clear the country desperately needed help as it faced years of violence.

More than one-third of the overall assistance ? about $469 million ? has yet to be spent and the World Bank must decide soon whether to extend a deadline for several of the programs to close by the end of June, or face losing grants to rebuild schools.

"When we talk with the government, when we talk to the primary stakeholders in the country, we try to explain to them that it is a pity that this money is just sitting where it is and it is not being utilized," said Marie-Helene Bricknell, the World Bank's special representative for Iraq.

Some of the money may have to be given back and distributed to the world's poorest counties if Iraq continues to sit on it, she said.

"It may difficult for us to argue (to keep) it if Africa needs the money, or if there is another food crisis in the world," Bricknell said. "Given the austerity around the world, it may be very difficult."

But World Bank officials in Baghdad also acknowledged the Iraqi government faced tremendous hurdles in trying to carry out the projects. There was no parliament when the first tranche of funding was provided, and the government was barely functional in the years the nation teetered on the brink in civil war.

The projects have picked up since Iraq's new government was seated in late 2010, but bureaucracy and contracting problems have stunted progress.

The World Bank is the latest foreign donor to be frustrated by Iraq's lax use of reconstruction aid. Billions of U.S. taxpayer funds have been wasted on projects to rebuild Iraq since the 2003 invasion. Auditors and prosecutors say much of the money has been siphoned away in corrupt contracts.

U.S. funding for Iraq is also dropping dramatically following the departure of American troops in December. Congress is considering cutting aid to Iraq by 77 percent and slashing what was initially touted as a $1 billion program for Iraqi police that was to be the centerpiece if the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad's efforts to continue training security forces.

In 2005, the World Bank began giving Iraq an additional $508 million in special loans that have little to no interest to try to speed up the development projects. The loans are normally given to the world's poorest countries, nearly half of which are in Africa.

Iraq is not considered a low-income country by the World Bank and normally would not be eligible for the funds. But an exception was made as Iraq struggled to recover from upheaval. A quarter of Iraq's population of 31 million lives in poverty, and 15 percent are unemployed, according to U.S. data compiled by the Central Intelligence Agency between 2008 and 2010.

Iraqi schools provide a stark example of the problem. Less than half of the $204 million earmarked for education programs has been spent.

Baghdad has asked for more time to spend about $16 million that's left from grants issued in October 2004 to rebuild schools. The Bank has signaled it may extend the June 30 deadline for the grant by another year.

With the roughly $44 million that's been spent so far, Iraq's education ministry has built 37 new schools nationwide and upgraded 133 old ones. Thirteen more schools are under construction and are expected to be completed by June 2013. Another 30 schools were built in Iraq's southern marshlands between 2006 and 2009 under a different World Bank program that cost $5.2 million.

All the 37 new schools were finished over the last 18 months, said senior Education Ministry official Saad Ibrahim Abdul Rahim, who is the agency's head liaison to the World Bank. He blamed the yearslong delay on bureaucratic snarls, a slow cash-flow to contractors and a lack of available land in populated areas upon which to build.

But last year, the ministry won approval from the prime minister's cabinet to build schools on land that belonged to other government agencies, and progress was made.

More than 6 million students attend Iraq's 15,000 public schools. Rahim said at least 5,000 more schools are needed to ease severe overcrowding.

Another $100 million was given to Iraq as an emergency education loan to ease crowding and update the curriculum in Iraq's schools. The project began in November 2005. Since then, the government has spent only $11 million and has three times asked for the loan to be extended in order to keep the money. It currently expires in June 2013.

There was initial optimism when the World Bank reconstruction program in Iraq began in 2004, but that vanished as the country spiraled into a cycle of violence with sectarian fighting and an insurgency that killed tens of thousands of people.

"After the collapse of the Saddam regime, there was a strong feeling that Iraq was going to grow and build a lot of projects," Rahim said. "But a year later there was a lot of sectarian conflict, and a lot of problems that caused a huge delay to all of the projects, in all of the ministries, for the reconstruction of Iraq."

Rahim was confident the deadlines would be met as violence ebbs and Iraq edges toward stability.

The Education Ministry spent $6.9 million of the loan funding last year ? more than six times of what it spent in 2010. By comparison, the ministry spent $19,800 from the loan fund in 2008.

"We are on track now and the project is going ahead, and there are no huge challenges or any big obstacles to slow or detail it," Rahim said.

Overall, Iraq had spent nearly $839 million of the $1.3 billion in World Bank grants and loans as of March 31, the latest data available. That money has helped create cell phone networks, improve drinking water for 600,000 people, rebuild and restock hospital emergency rooms, and train dozens of doctors and nurses across Iraq, according to the World Bank.

It has also paid for several studies to strengthen Iraq's government, reduce poverty and provide forecasts for the oil and gas industry through 2030 ? and any spinoff businesses that can create jobs and generate money.

And it has put 80 million textbooks in the hands of students whose numbers are growing every day. Half of Iraq's population is under 18, according to the United Nations, forcing schools to teach classes in morning and afternoon shifts to accommodate all the students.

In Iraq's northeast Diyala province alone, 381,000 students are enrolled in schools, said local education director Jaafar Moween al-Zarkushy.

Of 870 schools in Diyala, 65 were destroyed in sectarian fighting since 2003, al-Zarkushy said. Another 110 schools are about to collapse, and 17 more have been deemed inadequate because they are made out of mud.

"All students need a place to go to be taught," al-Zarkushy said forlornly. "The signs are not encouraging."

Roy Nelson notches quick UFC 146 KO

On a night of great knockouts, Roy Nelson's stiffening KO of Dave Herman at UFC 146 on Saturday evening stood out.

Nelson used an overhand right to knock Herman out. Herman immediately sat down, and dazed, tried to wrestle the referee. The bout was called 51 seconds into the first round. Afterwards, Nelson jumped to the top of the cage and did his signature celebration move of rubbing his belly.

The win was important for Nelson, who lost three of his previous four bouts. He needed a win to stay relevant in the heavyweight division.

Anything humorous can be categorized as being funny. It may be a question, an answer, sound or an action. Such humorous things are referred to as funny text messages if shared in written form through the internet or on phones.

The major reason for sending these jokes is to excite the recipient. If such a joke does not excite, then it is regarded as a flat, meaningless joke. If they have the intended impact, they help the recipient to refresh and relax.

Humorous notes are jokes in the form of a short message. Historically jokes are part of human way of living since the twentieth century. Jokes expressed in the intended manner are the best.

If one is coming up with a joke, he must be particularly keen to see the area he talks about is known by people. Political jokes are expressed in satire. The satire gives details about their lives and arguments. Writing and Cartoons are made to express joke about a politician.

Short texts and mails apart from entertaining, tell ones traits according to the jokes he or she tell. Peoples way of life drives them to the joke they share. No one jokes to people of things they do not know because it will be meaningless to them thus loss the purpose of the joke.

People who are close enough and know what makes their friends happy make up the majority of those who share humorous text messages. In most cases, friends have similar characteristic thus, whatever can make them happy will make the other one happy. These jokes ensure friendship is strengthening, and friends know each others well fare. With the price of milk low and feed and fuel costs spiraling, family dairy farms struggle to compete with large farms. In Vermont, the MacLaren family gives up dairy farming after three generations, joining the gradual national decline of small farms.

After working all their lives on the hillside farm in Vermont that their grandfather bought in 1939, rising to milk cows at 3 a.m., even in blizzards and sub-zero temperatures, they decided to call it quits, auctioning off their roughly 200 cows and equipment ranging from stalls and hoof trimmers to tractors and steel pails.

The sale marked the end of the last dairy farm in Plainfield ? a small town that once had several dozen ? and the 14th dairy farm to go out of business in Vermont this year. A few small?dairies have opened, but overall, the number of farms continues to drop in a state long known for its milk and cheese. Farmers say they can't make ends meet when milk?prices are low and feed and fuel costs keep going up.

"The day of the small farms, I think, is gone," said Steve MacLaren, 54. "A lot of people are going to hold on as long as they can, but we decided not to. Why struggle on it any longer?"

Economic issues aside, the MacLarens are tired of being tied to the farm seven days a week. They plan to keep the land and grow feed ? corn and grass for hay and silage ? on more than 500 acres.

"No matter what, you've got a sick cow or a cow having a calf, you've gotta be around whether it's 1:00 in the morning, or it's whatever time, you've got to take care of them," said Michael MacLaren, 48. "But if you've got a tractor break down, you can walk away from it. It's just a long hard grind, and I decided I'd like a change."

While the number of dairy cows in the U.S. hasn't changed much, the number of dairy farms has been dropping as small farms either go out of business or consolidate to become more competitive and cost effective.

The number of dairy farms nationally has dropped from nearly 92,000 in 2002 to less than 70,000 in 2007, according to the last agricultural census, which is being updated this year.

That's not the whole picture though. The number of small farms, with 100 to 199 cows, fell from about 11,000 to about 9,000 during that time, while those with more than 1,000 cows grew from about 1,300 to almost 1,600.

Seoul Players is pleased to announce a call for submissions for its 2nd annual 10 Minute Play Festival. Last season, the competition drew over 100 submissions from writers all over the world, and the selected pieces were performed to sold-out houses of Seoul?s most enthusiastic audiences! This year, we want the creative writing community of Seoul to be strongly represented ? and we need you?

Guidlines: Scripts must be no longer than 10-12 minutes in length. Also, keep in mind the feasibility of production. (We may love your play about flying gorillas who speak Ancient Greek, but can we produce it?)

The shows of the 14th and 15th will each feature a different line-up of selected plays. The audiences will vote on which top two/three plays should advance to the final round of competition, to be held on the 22nd, where an over-all winner will be voted best of the festival, and a valuable prize will be awarded!
