Francis Beckett ? Tribune ? Comment, news and reviews from ...

One of the many benefits I discovered when I left the Roman Catholic Church is that we atheists are not expected to believe in the infallibility of Richard Dawkins. So when Professor Dawkins said that calling a child a Christian just because the parents are Christian is a form of child abuse, I dissented. No move for my excommunication was made in the British Humanist Association. Keith Wood, who runs the National Secular Society, did not look speculatively at my hands and murmur: ?Were you fond of those fingernails, then??

Now, once again, I feel grateful for the freedom to be a heretic among heretics. Education Secretary Michael Gove has just approved the first creationist free school. After September 2013, children at Newark Business Academy are likely to be taught that superstition is at least as reliable as science. That?s a rather poor show, of course, but nothing like as new or as shocking as the British Humanist Association thinks it is.

For Gove?s New Labour predecessors have already handed a growing number of schools over to other religious organisations, with the result that thousands of children are going to state schools where they are taught to believe that a round, white, edible wafer magically transmogrifies into the body and blood of Jesus Christ when a man in colourful robes mutters an incantation over it.

Others are learning that it is wrong to turn on an electric light on a Saturday unless you live in a district of the city around which someone wearing a hat has ceremonially placed string, muttered incantations over it and called it an eruv.

Christianity, Judaism, Islam and the rest are full of this sort of spookery ? and children are taught it as fact. We also teach our children about Father Christmas and the tooth fairy, but at least we have the decency, at some point early in their lives, to take them quietly aside and explain that it?s all rubbish. We never tell them the truth about Baby Jesus.

But then parents have always passed their beliefs onto their children, however quirky those beliefs may be. I think telling them about Saviour Jesus or Prophet Mahomet is rather like telling them to believe that the great Jub-Jub under the sea makes the sun shine. But perhaps a fervent Christian, Muslim, Sikh or religious Jewish parent might find equally odd the ideas of equality and a fairer world which I tried fitfully to pass onto my children. My children will keep the bits they want and throw away the rest, and so will theirs.

But I think it does get uncomfortably close to child abuse when, in addition to telling them that these things are true, you send them to a school where your religious belief is the official belief of the school, where all the children are forced to pray to your God every day; where they are taught, as fact, the dogmas of your faith, and where, as far as possible, all the teachers and pupils are of your faith.

Home and school together become an artificial world in which no serious person doubts the dogmas of your faith, and, as in Plato?s cave, you are forcing children to suppose that it is the real world.

That?s child abuse; and it doesn?t make a jot of difference whether the walls of their prison are papered with a Catholic cross to ward off vampires, or a creationist magic wand lest you should want to build a world.

None of this has stopped Education Secretaries for the past 30 years from handing ever-bigger chunks of our state education system to religions to control. Michael Gove does it partly because he is himself a Christian and wants to spread his faith, which is pretty disreputable. Charles Clarke, who is an atheist, does it because he thinks religious belief makes for a better society. Even if he were right (which he isn?t), the idea of a useful lie is even more disreputable.

So I?m less shocked by Gove?s action than I was when New Labour started the business of getting religion to control an increasing number of schools. The ?belief of the creationists ? that scientific research is wrong, because they and their God say so ? may be a bit more absurd than those of their ?co-religionists, but it?s only a matter of degree.

Self-hypnosis and meditation stimulate right brain activity

There are two hemispheres in the brain: the left and the right.? Humans engage the left hemisphere more now than ever.

Left-brain activity includes verbal, analytical and intellectual thought. Activities include thinking, solving problems and organizing. An over-active left-brain, however, can often result in insomnia, fatigue, incessant mental activity and even high blood pressure.

Right brain activity is emotional and intuitive.? It is the side of the brain that is in charge of behavior.? Self-hypnosis and meditation stimulate right brain activity.? The more you practice right brain activities, the more at peace you will feel emotionally.

Meditation practice results in the ability to induce states of deep relaxation, which translates into rejuvenation of the body/mind almost like rebooting a computer.

By becoming a quiet observer of the thoughts of the mind, the very act of witnessing from an objective distance can alleviate negative thoughts and emotions.

Research about meditation indicates that regular meditation practice can dissolve feelings of separation, facilitate liberation from identification with past personal history and enhance feelings of empathy both for oneself and others.

Meditation and self-hypnosis differ in one essential way.? Meditation is simply non-doing. It is the act of sitting quietly, listening, feeling, seeing, experiencing everything happening inside your body and mind as it relates to the sounds and other energetic stimuli that surrounds you at any given moment.

Self-hypnosis, on the other hand directs the mind to imagine new beliefs or behaviors.? You can re-educate your unconscious mind to replace unwanted behaviors with new and different behaviors that align with your natural values.

It requires imagination of a positive state one aspires to attain.? Self-hypnosis is not only relaxing, it is the key factor in motivation and attitude shifts.

We regularly and unconsciously hypnotize ourselves all the time.? Every time you say, ?I could never do that? or ?I am always (fill in the blank),? you are hypnotizing yourself into a limited and finite identity.

Meditation Technique

Imagine a string pulling on top of your head holding your spine erect. Bring awareness to the sounds all around you, to the rhythm of your breath, the coolness of the air as you breathe in, to the warmth of the air as you breathe out.

Release the tension in your muscles. Focus on sounds, your breath or the rise and fall of your belly.? When the mind begins to think, bring the focus back to that sensory component.? Allow yourself to stop and simply BE.

Observe through your five senses, non-judgmentally.

Invite yourself to relax into the present. ?Just there, in the center of the all the activity, is a profound place of peace and calm.

Self-Hypnosis Technique

Relax the entire body from the feet up through the legs, hips, torso, the shoulders, down the arms and into the hands.? The more your hands relax, the more relaxed your neck and jaw become.

Continue to relax the mouth, cheeks, nose, muscles around the eyes, eyelids, eyebrows, forehead and scalp.? Imagine a staircase with ten steps leading downward to a door that opens into a comforting environment.

Walk down each step counting from one to ten, relaxing deeper with each count.? At the final count of ten imagine you already are, already do and already have everything that you want in your life.

Feel the emotions attached to these desires and embed them into your subconscious.? Imagine how you look, sound, move, how you talk to yourself and others and how you behave when you are functioning optimally.

When you feel satisfied, take yourself back up the stairs from ten to one feeling more and more energized and awake with each step until your eyes open and you feel refreshed at the count of one.

Thrutch: Pensions and Property Taxes

One factor in my personal decision to rent rather than own a house, is my fear that property is a sitting duck for any government short of funds. ?I worry that all the pension crises at every level of government will cause massive increases in property taxes, since, as opposed to yourself and your income, you can't move the location of your property. ?I think my logic has merit, and a piece in the WSJ corroborates it, though not exactly in the manner I'd envisioned.

?Bankrupt?and quasi-bankrupt?municipalities are considering hiking the transfer taxes on properties. ?This, in an attempt to prevent people from leaving and thus remaining as taxpayers. ?I expect such taxes (and the desperation they reveal) will knock down property prices in those locales.

Ultimately, however, the biggest victims of the city's fiscal crisis are taxpayers. Despite paring public services, the city projects $45 million annual deficits for the next five years. Since further service reductions could endanger public safety and cause an exodus of residents, the city manager and its director of finance suggest that the city explore raising revenues. Their recent budget analysis recommends increasing the property transfer tax by nearly 500%.

Chinese Online Shoppers Losing US$46 Billion Through Fraud
front

Well, look like Chinese web user are more easy to get into con trick. More than 60 million Chinese internet users have been victims of online fraud as of the end of June 2012. According to a most recent report on internet business security, Chinese web users were lured into online shopping pitfalls in the past year, losing more than an estimated 300 billion yuan (US$46 billion). One typical method by fraudsters offered particularly low prices to lure unwary buyers. This year?s new threat to online shopping was using phishing attacks which target at Chinese e-commerce and banking web sites, with a majority of the domain names created by local cyber-criminals eyeing local brands and enterprises ?

The majority of Chinese phishing appears to be perpetrated by Chinese criminals attacking Chinese companies. The majority of attacks had their eye on Taobao.com. According to the report from the Anti-Phishing Working Group, in the second half of 2011, the Chinese e-commerce site surpassed PayPal to become the world?s most frequently phished brand target. There were 18,508 phishing attacks against Taobao.com, which represents 22 percent of all the phishing attacks recorded worldwide.

in001
Many internet users in China have been victims of online fraud.

The concern is that the rapidly increasing cases of online fraud have happened at a time when more local and foreign companies are planning to set up their own online stores in the fast growing Chinese market, including several international luxury brands. As more and more companies and Chinese consumers prefer to use the internet as a trading platform, how to ensure web security is a vitally important issue now for the Chinese government to be address.

Anxiety linked to shortened telomeres, accelerated aging

ScienceDaily (July 11, 2012) ? Is anxiety related to premature aging? A new study by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) shows that a common form of anxiety, known as phobic anxiety, was associated with shorter telomeres in middle-aged and older women. The study suggests that phobic anxiety is a possible risk factor for accelerated aging.

The study will be electronically published on July 11, 2012 in PLoS ONE.

Telomeres are DNA-protein complexes at the ends of chromosomes. They protect chromosomes from deteriorating and guard the genetic information at the ends of chromosomes during cell division. Telomeres are considered markers of biological or cellular aging. Shortened telomeres have been linked to increased risk of cancers, heart disease, dementia and mortality.

In this large, cross-sectional study, researchers had obtained blood samples from 5,243 women, age 42 to 69 years, who were participants in the Nurses' Health Study. Using the samples, the researchers analyzed telomere lengths, as well as the participants' concurrent self-reports regarding phobic symptoms on a validated questionnaire.

Having a high phobic anxiety level was associated with significantly shorter telomere lengths. The difference in telomere lengths for women who were highly phobic vs. not was similar to what was seen for an additional six years of age.

"Many people wonder about whether -- and how -- stress can make us age faster," said Olivia Okereke, MD, MS, BWH Department of Psychiatry, study author. "So, this study is notable for showing a connection between a common form of psychological stress -- phobic anxiety -- and a plausible mechanism for premature aging. However, this type of study design cannot prove cause-and-effect or which problem came first -- the anxiety or shorter telomeres."

The findings pave the way for further prospective investigations relating anxiety to telomere length change.

Blake wins 200 meters, goes 2 for 2 vs Bolt

(AP) ? No posing, no salutes, no fist pumping. Yohan Blake simply paced in front of the jam-packed grandstand at National Stadium and stared up into the crowd, letting all those fans soak in a nice, long look.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the man to beat at the London Olympics.

In a result that can no longer be considered a surprise, Blake beat Usain Bolt in the 200 meters at Jamaican Olympic trials Sunday, finishing in 19.80 seconds to edge the world-record holder by 0.03.

When it was over, Bolt was the first one to approach his training partner and buddy and give him a big bear hug. Moments later, Bolt was down on the ground, getting his right hamstring stretched out, while Blake was celebrating ? rather modestly ? in front of the grandstand.

"A lot of people gave me encouragement, said, 'Yohan Blake, you can do it,'" Blake said. "I just wanted to keep performing and keep going."

The win came two days after Blake, the reigning world 100 champion, beat Bolt in the 100 by running a personal-best 9.75.

That was a shocker, but there were explanations ? most notably the terrible starts Bolt got off to throughout the 100 heats and in the final. Bolt has always considered the 200, which better suits his lanky 6-foot-5 frame, his real work. And indeed, he has work to do there, as well.

As they approached the finish line, Bolt was grimacing ? or was that the hint of a frustrated smile ? as he looked to his left to see what hardly anyone could have imagined earlier this week: Blake beating him to the finish line for the second time in the span of three days.

"I'll have to figure out what I did wrong and work on it," Bolt said.

In the women's 200, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce ran a personal best 22.10 seconds to also complete the 100-200 sweep. She'll be joined by Sherone Simpson and two-time defending Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown.

They'll all have some ground to make up. At U.S. trials this weekend, Allyson Felix won the 200 final, also in a personal best of 21.69 seconds.

"I'm happy for Allyson," Campbell-Brown said. "That's a very good time for her. And the faster we run, the sweeter it will be at the Olympic Games, because anyone who wins that will have to run very, very fast."

Same thing for the guys, and for the next four weeks, the guessing game figures to take on Olympics-sized proportions.

Both Blake, Bolt and their coach, Glen Mills, all conceded that Blake came into these trials in better shape than the man whose marks ? 9.58 and 19.19 ? sit atop the record book.

So, was Bolt genuinely just coasting through this weekend in front of all his home fans, making sure he made it, getting ready for something bigger? Is his conditioning not up to snuff, and if so, is there time to get there? Or, might he be hurting, as it appeared when he was getting his leg worked on while lying on the track?

"I don't want to get into that," Bolt said.

Mills, meanwhile, said he wasn't concerned with his star student ? or at least the man who used to be his star student.

"Usain, he has the experience, the ability, he has been there already," Mills said. "He might be a little off at the moment but I'm sure when the time of delivery comes around, he'll be on top of his game."
