Range Resources raises oil and gas reserve estimates for North Chapman Ranch project

?(, ASX:RRS)?announced that it is now preparing to sell its interests in the North Chapman Ranch project in Texas following a significant increase in its oil and gas reserves.

Investors cheered the news, sending shares in Range up 4.5 percent to ?174.5 million by 9am.

The reserve upgrade followed the completion of the?Smith No.2 and Albrecht No.1 wells, which increased production from the field to?4.5 million cubic feet per day (mmcfpd) and 394 barrels of oil per day (bopd).

Compared with the previous update in December, oil reserve estimates for the project, which is 20-25 percent owned by Range, have increased 57 percent to 1.1 million barrels (mmbbls) in the proved category and 20 percent to 0.6 mmbbls in the probable category.

Proved gas reserves have risen 54 percent to 11.7 billion cubic feet (bcf) and probable reserves climbed 16 percent to 6.4 bcf.

The company is now preparing to sell its interests in North Chapman Ranch, targeting completion in the third quarter of the year, to ?focus its capital on higher value adding opportunities in its portfolio?.

?We are extremely pleased with the recent results from our Texas drilling programs,? said executive director of Range Peter Landau.

?The sales prices of similar production assets in the region have been encouraging, and any such divestment will provide significant funding that could be applied to Range's current activities and other possible corporate initiatives such as an on market share buy back.?

Based on the new ?estimates, consultancy Forrest Garb values Range?s North Chapman proved and possible reserves at US$93 million and US$39 million respectively, while the total value including possible reserves stands at US$169 million.

Range also provided an update from its East Texas Cotton Valley project area, where additional sections of the Ross 3H horizontal well were recently fracture stimulated.

This well has already shown early indications of oil saturation, consistent with strong oil shows recorded during drilling.

The project is considered to be similar to the adjacent Clarksville field, which is expected to produce more than seven million barrels of oil.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Is it "anything goes" now in America's campaign finance system?

John Edwards is acquitted of using campaign cash as hush money. There's an explosion of high-dollar super political action committees in the presidential race. It's all stoking criticism of revisions and regulatory loopholes in a system that was intended to keep better control of political money after Watergate.

Loosening the law has made it easier for politicians to butt up against the legal line ? if not cross it ? and for wealthy Americans to influence who wins office, from the White House on down.

All told, the immense amount of money in American campaigns, the cozy relationships between candidates and their financial backers ? and now, too, a seeming lack of accountability for alleged rule-breakers ? is fueling the public's long-standing distrust of its politicians and doubts about the credibility of the system.

"There's not much for voters to have faith in," says Trevor Potter, a former Federal Election Commission member and a proponent of campaign-finance reform. "We don't have much of a campaign-finance system at this stage, and we are wide open to the possibilities of corruption."

Spanning many weeks, the Edwards trial in North Carolina showcased what prosecutors said was a classic case of misusing campaign funds: Here was a former presidential candidate, they said, who channeled large sums of money from a deep-pocketed donor to cover up a love child and a mistress. But jurors acquitted Edwards, in part because the statute he was charged under required him to know he was breaking the law.

Jurors said the government didn't prove that. Said one, Sheila Lockwood: "I just felt that he didn't receive any of the money, so you can't really charge him for money that he got."

Campaign finance laws have changed remarkably since Edwards ran for the White House four years ago.

Had he been a candidate this year, and had his backers wanted to help him, they could have established a super PAC and donated unlimited amounts of money that could have been used in any number of ways. It's unclear if that still would have been legal for the uses in his case, although the super PACs have been able to take more risks than the campaigns they support. Super PACs are barred from coordinating with a candidate.

But it doesn't seem that clarity is coming anytime soon. The FEC can't agree on new regulations.

Take last December, when a Republican super PAC asked commissioners if it could "fully coordinate" with a Senate candidate. The commission deadlocked on a 3-3 vote after a heated discussion.

Michael Toner, a Washington lawyer and election law expert, said it would be a mistake to conclude that the failed prosecution of Edwards means that campaign finance violations will not be prosecuted.

"There's no question that there were relatively unique facts in the Edwards case," he said, and that there are other areas in campaign law where wrongdoing is clear cut ? such as contributions from foreigners.

It's not just the FEC. A divided Congress has shown no appetite to take up the issue in earnest despite calls for an overhaul by Democrats after a series of federal court rulings ? including the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision in 2010 ? started to deregulate the system.

Political gridlock and regulatory ambiguity have paved the way for an unprecedented amount of spending from outside groups and special interests. Campaigns, political parties and super PACs supporting President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney have raised more than $400 million apiece, figures that put the election on track to cost more than $1 billion.

Despite claims of independence, super PACs have incredibly close ties to the candidates they're working to help elect.

Restore Our Future, supporting Mitt Romney, shares office space with the same consultants who help Romney's own campaign. The groups insist there is a "firewall" ? the workspaces are separated, they have said, by a conference room. A former White House spokesman, Bill Burton, runs the Priorities USA Action super PAC with its goal of helping Obama win a second term.

The fuzzy rules have super PACs pushing the limits. Many have nonprofit arms that legally don't have to disclose their donors. Some mega-donors ? notably casino mogul Sheldon Adelson ? have said they will be giving their money to these shelters to avoid public scrutiny.

"That's exactly what the laws we have are supposed to prevent," Potter said, "that one candidate for public office is not completely beholden to an individual and his interests."

Congress began to change how Americans fund their elections in the mid-1970s after slush funds and cover-ups forced Richard Nixon's resignation.

"I believe that one of the crucial factors in determining whether or not we consider a government democratic is not how much power public officials have, but rather how public officials secure and retain their offices," Lawton Chiles told his colleagues on the Senate floor in April 1974.

Since then, there's been no shortage of instances of questionable relationships between politicians and the people who bankroll their candidacies.

On the Democratic side, hundreds of Obama's major backers have had repeated access to his top advisers or have attended glamorous state dinners. The White House has declined to offer complete details on those meetings. And on the Republican side, GOP super PACs have faced their own troubles in disclosing donors required under existing rules. Some major contributors have been listed in federal data with ambiguous addresses or shell corporations.

Situations like those have fueled voter distrust of both parties.

Republican Sen. John McCain, a major player in campaign-finance reform, has warned the current system is so influenced by wealthy donors that it will require "major scandals" before it is fixed. Conversely, anti-reform advocates have said campaign-finance deregulation is more faithful to free-speech protections afforded by the First Amendment.

One thing certain in an otherwise uncertain campaign finance landscape is that no changes are imminent. This will be the system at least through the November election.

On Thursday night, when users experienced loading issues for at least two hours, hacking group Anonymous commented via its Twitter account about the slowdown. It's not clear from the posts whether the hacktivists had anything to do with the problems or were just celebrating them.

"Looks like good old Facebook is having packet problems" and "Oh yeah ... RIP Facebook a new sound of tango down, b------," were among the tweets posted by @YourAnonNews on Twitter.

While a Facebook spokesperson would not address the Anonymous posts on Thursday night, he gave msnbc.com the following statement:?

"Earlier today, some users briefly experienced issues loading the site.?The issues have since been resolved and everyone should now have access?to Facebook. We apologize for any inconvenience."

At approximately 9 a.m. ET Friday morning,? the website?DownForEveryoneOrJustMe?showed that Facebook continued to suffer intermittent outages for some of the social network's nearly 1 billion users. Msnbc.com has again contacted Facebook for an update and will update this story when we hear back.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, said the company is not sure what's behind the problems, "but I would note that in the past Facebook downtime or inaccessibility have not been for malicious reasons.

"My guess is that it's more likely that there were more down-to-earth internal reasons for the downtime rather than an attack," he told msnbc.com.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A New York judge is set to hear arguments over what a jury can decide in a civil trial stemming from the Broadway production of "Spider-Man."

Judge Katherine Forrest must decide whether to dismiss fired director Julie Taymor's claims that her copyright on a three-page script treatment for the musical was violated. She also will decide the fate of counterclaims brought against Taymor by the show's producers. A hearing is set for Friday.

Taymor was fired in 2011 as the $75 million production sputtered to get off the ground despite three months of preview performances. The musical was rewritten and it successfully reopened. Taymor sued the producers in November and they countersued. In court papers, the producers say Taymor's treatment was based on pre-existing "Spider-Man" comics and films.

ScienceDaily (May 31, 2012) ? Hiding your true social identity -- race and ethnicity, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation or a disability -- at work can result in decreased job satisfaction and increased turnover, according to a new study from Rice University, the University of Houston and George Mason University.

"The workplace is becoming a much more diverse place, but there are still some individuals who have difficulty embracing what makes them different, especially while on the job," said Michelle Hebl, Rice professor of psychology and co-author of "Bringing Social Identity to Work: The Influence of Manifestation and Suppression on Perceived Discrimination, Job Satisfaction and Turnover Intentions." The paper appears in the Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology journal.

"Previous research suggests that employees who perceive discrimination or are afraid of receiving discrimination are more likely to fall into this category of individuals who feel the need to suppress or conceal their identity," Hebl said.

The study examined the behavior of 211 working adults in an online survey and measured factors such as identity, perceived discrimination, job satisfaction and turnover intentions.

"This research highlights the fact that people make decisions every day about whether it is safe to be themselves at work, and that there are real consequences of these decisions," said Rice alumna Eden King, study co-author and associate professor of psychology at George Mason University.

The study also showed that suppressing one's true identity might result in exposure to co-workers' discriminatory behavior, as people are less likely to care about appearing prejudiced when they are not in the presence of an "out" group member. On the contrary, the research finds that expression of one's true identity in a workplace can have positive impact on their interpersonal relationships.

"When individuals embrace their social identity in the workplace, other co-workers might be more sensitive to their behavior and treatment of individuals like them," said Juan Madera, a University of Houston professor, Rice alumnus and lead study author. "And quite often, what's good for the worker is good for the workplace. The employees feel accepted and have better experiences with co-workers, which creates a positive working environment that may lead to decreased turnover and greater profits."

The authors hope their research will encourage the general public to be accepting of people with diverse backgrounds and become allies to them and encourage employers to implement policies that foster a positive organizational culture.

"I think this study really demonstrates that everyone can have a role in making the workplace more inclusive," Hebl said. "Individuals tell co-workers, who can act as allies and react positively, and organizations can institute protective and inclusive organizational policies. All of these measures will continue to change the landscape and diversity of our workforce."

Our ability to "read" DNA has made tremendous progress in the past few decades, but the ability to understand and alter the genetic code, that is, to "rewrite" the DNA-encoded instructions, has lagged behind. A new Weizmann Institute study advances our understanding of the genetic code: It proposes a way of effectively introducing numerous carefully planned DNA segments into genomes of living cells and of testing the effects of these changes. The study is being reported in the June issues of Nature Biotechnology and Nature Genetics.

Until now, changing the DNA sequence has been a slow and labor-intensive process. It took several weeks to alter just one DNA region at a time; testing the effects of each of these changes took even longer. In the new study, Weizmann Institute scientists have developed a technology that makes it possible to simultaneously introduce tens of thousands of DNA regions into tens of thousands of living cells ? each region in a separate cell ? in a planned and systematic manner, and to measure the results of each such change with great precision and within a single experiment.

"This fast method will significantly advance our ability to understand the 'language' of DNA," says research team leader Prof. Eran Segal, of the Weizmann Institute's Computer Science and Applied Mathematics and Molecular Cell Biology Departments. "Reading out a person's entire genome is already a manageable task, but what exactly is written in that genome? After all, a genome looks like a lengthy string of letters whose meaning is for the most part obscure. Just deciphering the DNA letters is like trying to understand a foreign language by listening to it being spoken. Our method will help us identify DNA 'words' and understand their meaning."

Understanding what's written in the DNA might help us interpret, among other things, how genotypic differences among people generate observable differences among them, from the way we look to the way our cells function. Thus, for example, it might be possible to clarify which genetic differences are responsible for the development of various diseases in certain individuals. The Weizmann Institute technology can also lead to improved genetic therapies based on introducing new genes or improved regulatory sequences into cells in order to repair genetic defects.

In the present study, the scientists investigated a vital aspect of the DNA language: How the control of gene expression is encoded in the DNA ? that is, the instructions determining the level of activity of each gene in the genetic code. Since gene activity levels have crucial effects on cell function, this question, considered one of the central in molecular biology, has been studied for decades. The new technology has enabled the scientists to isolate and test the effects of various parameters on gene activity levels: For example, how a gene's activity level is affected by the gene's distance from its regulatory sequence. The researchers have managed to elucidate how various parameters define the regulatory "language" and to demonstrate how deliberate changes in the genetic sequence affect these parameters in a way that alters the level of a gene's activity in a predictable manner.

The new method consists of four steps that combine existing technologies in an innovative manner. The steps are: creation of 50,000 different genetic sequences on DNA chips; massive insertion of these sequences into cells at the same time; sorting the cells with the help of a sorting machine that senses the expression levels of a "reporter" gene; and high-throughput parallel DNA sequencing.
