Tennis players travel with their pets too | The Jet Set Pets

Venus Williams and dog Harold

With the eyes of the tennis world on pet-friendly Paris, where the French Open is taking place at the famed Roland Garros Stadium, comes a story in The Independent today titled ?Tennis players take the lead on canine companions.?

Dogs are becoming the must-have accessory for modern tennis stars. Serena Williams regularly travels with hers in the United States, sister Venus brought her pet dog, Harold, into a press conference earlier this year, and Novak Djokovic is sometimes accompanied at tournaments by his poodle, Pierre.

Richard Gasquet and Andy Murray, who meet here today, have both had their dogs with them at the French Open. Maggie and Rusty, Murray?s border terriers, have gone home now after the Scot described taking them for walkies down the Champs-Elyse?s as ?a little bit emotional?. He explained: ?There were a lot of people and smaller dogs as well. They?re not the friendliest when they?re on leads.?

Gasquet, meanwhile, has been accompanied by his pet Alsatian, Ganso, named after a Brazilian footballer. Francis, Gasquet?s father, told L?Equipe, the French sports newspaper: ?Of course, Richard hasn?t got a lot of time to look after him here, but he really helps him to relax when he does have time with him.?

Paris made The Jet Set Pets? list of?Top 10 Pet-Friendly Destinations. But too bad the tennis players often don?t get to enjoy that fabulous city with their furry friend since they are busy working. Yet, it?makes sense that tennis players would want to bring their posh pals on the road with them.?These professional athletes travel nearly year-round, stay at luxury hotels that usually welcome pets, and may end up being in a locale for a week or two if they continue winning.

?It?s tough out there on tour,? Venus Williams said a few years ago. ??It?s a grind just as the weeks and days pass by. You?re out there on your own and you need a friend who?s there for you ? wins, loss, who really cares for you. I recently found that someone and that?s Harold.?Whether I win or lose, Harold doesn?t know. He doesn?t even like tennis. He?s just waiting for me to get off the court.?

Do you take your pet to work with you? Let The Jet Set Pets know how doing so helps you or if you?re pushing for a pet-friendly workplace.
