MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- Erica Campbell said her youngest child, Ava "Bug" Campbell,?was a miracle from the start because she and her husband were told they couldn't have more children. But Ava's big sister prayed hard, and with the blessing came a challenge.
"She was diagnosed at 21-months-old with a very high risk, rare type of acute Lymphoblastic leukemia. Her's has a gene mutation with it, so it just makes it more complicated to treat and easier to relapse," said Erica. That meant daily chemo at home and trips to Children's Hospital in Birmingham for more treatment.
Erica said it's a journey of faith. "It's really shown us not only to be an advocate for our daughter, but to be an advocate for our friends who have buried their children," she added.
Hence the gold bows, bracelets and more... "We have been going to different towns and speaking with the mayors and asking them to declare their town or county as September being childhood cancer awareness month," said Erica.
With that advocacy comes a reality for a family of faith. "If her healing takes place here on Earth, that's what we want. But we know that if God's plan is different, we're going to be okay with that."
By sharing Ava's story, parents and friends hope to not only raise awareness about childhood cancer, but to some day turn that awareness into a cure.
